The Karst landscape
In contrast to the marine landscape - flat, bright and regular - the harsh and rocky environment of the Karst landscape goes as far as the coast, modelled by small coves and steep cliffs overlooking the sea. The most obvious aspect of the Karst is the absence of a surface hydrography; the meteoric water takes quickly the road to the subsoil, digging the soluble limestone and giving rise to a whole series of characteristic morphological phenomena, precisely known by the name of "carsismo": underground rivers, sinks, caves, chasms. As a consequence of such a high permeability the environment is generally stony and dry but not bare; the vivid colours of the vegetation ( brilliant green during summer, yellow and red in autumn ) create in every season a unique and regenerating sight. The air is rich with balsamic perfumes that in the proximity of the coast blend with the salty smell of marine water. The climate is mild in every season, tempered by the nearness to the sea.
